Ok so you don’t live in your dream home, your carpet reminds you of Grandma’s house and that 70’s Lino on the kitchen floor has seen better days – I understand because I have had to live in homes like this over the years.
You wish that you had the money to renovate and update, but it’s just not on the cards right now?
Well, I have come up with a few solutions that helped me back then and that I still use today. I hope these suggestions will help you too
Clean Up and Tidy It
Sorry to have to bring it up and be the party pooper, but you would be amazed what a difference a good spruce up can do to a space – a clean and tidy home is a much more beautiful home.
So put your gloves on and get cleaning – wipe down surfaces, clearing the clutter as you go, make all the beds and pick up shoes etc. off the floor.
You know the drill so get cracking – but if you need a little extra help, you can download my free e-book ‘Ultimate De-Cluttering Guide From Chaos To Calm’
Get Rid of the Little Things That You Truly Don’t Like
Yes really, get rid of it. Remove anything that just doesn’t do it for you.
You can give them away, or if you really can’t part with them (maybe they were a gift?) put them in the garage on a shelf so that you don’t have to see it every day.
Same goes for things that you don’t use. It’s far better to have an “empty” house than to have one filled to the brim with things that don’t make your home feel beautiful to you.
Rearrange Your Furniture
Maybe it’s the designer in me, but I was doing this even as a teenager and driving my Mum crazy. It always makes me feel like I have a whole new room.
Rearranging your furniture, in any room, can really freshen up the space and help you to see your space in a whole new light
Shop Your Own Home
Going hand in hand with rearranging your furniture – rearrange your décor.
Use a plain white bowl from the kitchen to hold random items at the front door.
Look at your accessories as being useful in more than just one space and for more than its intended use.
Ask For Chic Hand-Me-Downs
There is no shame in asking (or even posting on Facebook) your friends with great taste, if they have any decor items they’re not using anymore.
I’ve been both the giver and receiver of beautiful decor items.
Some people just tend to change out their decor more often than others and would be more than happy to have what they bought put to good use in someone else’s home.
Go to Garage Sales at the End of Their Day
When people have garage sales, they are usually a one off a day and they are wanting to offload everything on that one day.
If at the end of the day they still have items left, chances are they will just about give it away.
So bide your time and wait till the very end. Or wait until the next day, it’s likely that most of what was left over from the sale will be on the nature strip.
Sometimes decorating isn’t about buying new things, just re-arranging or re-purposing what you already have, grabbing a garage sale bargain or swapping items with friends
